Dental gum surgery:

Dental gum surgery, also known as periodontal surgery or periodontal therapy, is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the treatment and management of gum (periodontal) diseases. Gum surgery is performed by periodontists, who are dentists with specialized training in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums and bone.

Gum surgery is typically recommended for individuals with advanced gum disease (periodontitis) that has not responded to less invasive treatments like scaling and root planing.

Other indications include gum recession, pocket reduction, gum tissue grafting, and dental implant placement.

2-Types of Gum Surgery:

*Scaling and Root Planing: This non-surgical procedure involves deep cleaning of the tooth’s root surfaces to remove plaque and tartar.

*Gum Grafting: Used to treat receding gums, where tissue from one part of the mouth is transplanted to cover exposed root surfaces.

*Pocket Reduction Surgery: Involves the removal of diseased tissue and reshaping of the bone to reduce pocket depth.

*Crown Lengthening: Performed to expose more of the tooth’s surface for restorative purposes.

*Dental Implant Surgery: The placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth.

*Osseous Surgery: Removes and reshapes bone tissue to eliminate pockets and improve gum health.

Prior to gum surgery, your periodontist will conduct a thorough examination, which may include X-rays and measurements of pocket depths.

Discuss any medical conditions, medications, or allergies with your periodontist.

Follow any pre-surgery instructions provided, such as fasting if required.

4-The Surgical Procedure:

Gum surgery is typically performed using local anesthesia to numb the area.

The specific procedure will depend on the type of surgery being performed.

Instruments and techniques may include scalpels, lasers, and sutures, depending on the case.

Post-surgery, patients may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bleeding.

Pain medications and antibiotics may be prescribed.

A soft diet is often recommended during the initial healing period.

Good oral hygiene practices are crucial to avoid infection and promote healing.

6-Follow-up Care:

Regular follow-up appointments with your periodontist are essential to monitor healing and ensure the success of the procedure.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is critical to prevent a recurrence of gum disease.

Gum surgery can help save teeth that might otherwise be lost due to advanced gum disease.

It can improve the appearance of the gums, enhance smile aesthetics, and address issues like gum recession.

Dental implant surgery can replace missing teeth, restoring functionality and aesthetics.

Like any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with gum surgery, including infection, bleeding, and complications related to anesthesia.

Some patients may experience postoperative pain and discomfort.

The cost of gum surgery varies depending on the type of procedure, location, and the extent of the issue being addressed.

Dental insurance may cover some of the costs associated with gum surgery.

Overall, dental gum surgery is a crucial component of periodontal care and can help individuals maintain healthy gums and teeth. It is essential to consult with a qualified periodontist to determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on individual oral health needs.

How Often Should I See The Dentist?

Children, teens, and adults should all see the dentist for a regular checkup at least once every six months. Patients who are at a greater risk for oral cancer or gum disease may be required to see the dentist more than just twice a year. Your doctor will help determine how often you should visit the dentist for regular check-ups.

Do you have pediatrics?
