Risks of Not Treating Dental Emergencies

In some cases, ignoring a dental emergency for too long can be fatal. There is a possibility that the infection from an abscess or untreated gum disease will spread to other areas of the body.
he pus in an abscess can travel to the jaw and neighboring teeth, causing complications there. Infection can also spread beyond the mouth to organs such as the heart or brain. Between 2000 and 2009, more than 60,000 patients were hospitalized as a result of previously untreated tooth abscesses.

 Dental Emergencies:

Cracked, Chipped or Broken Teeth

This is one of the most painful emergencies. You should call the dentist as soon as possible. In the mean time, rinse your mouth with warm water, and try to keep the tooth if possible. Putting an ice-pack on it in transit to the dental office can also be helpful.

You Knocked A Tooth Loose(Traumatic Dental Injuries)

In the case that a tooth is loose and hasn’t been knocked out completely, the dentist may be able to save your tooth, take some regular over the counter painkillers, and get to the dentist as soon as possible. Putting some ice on it while coming to us can be helpful.

Having a tooth knocked out or having a tooth knocked out of position but still in the mouth is a real emergency. In such an event, it’s best if you can get to us within 30 minutes after the injury. Bring the tooth with you. Avoid touching the root of the tooth, or harsh cleaning. Pick the tooth up by the crown, not the root. It is essential that the tooth stays moist.

Broke, Loosened or Lost your Crown Filling, Onlays, Veneers or Bridges

This can be very painful. Try to keep the crown or filling if you still have it and bring it with you to the dentist.

In case of lost or damaged restorations, things can go a few ways.

  • If the tooth was previously treated with a root canal therapy the problem should be addressed quickly. Since the tooth has no nerves, the loss of the old restoration will not cause any pain. However, such a tooth is set for further breakage.
  • If the tooth had no root canal treatment, the exposure to air, liquids, and food is likely to cause sensitivity with pain. You can use clove oil to try to soothe the sensitivity as well as get some dental cement from a local drug store, but the best thing to do is to visit us as soon as possible.

Sudden Painful Toothache

Toothaches can be the symptom of a lot of different issues. A digital scan should help identify the underlying cause. As an example, sudden intense pain can be a sign of an abscess.

Something got stuck between your teeth

When something gets stuck between your teeth, it can lead to an infection alongside its pain. First, try to get it out yourself with a floss or soft picks, if its painful, you should definitely give us a call asap, don’t ignore it!

Abscess infections/Sudden Swelling in your mouth

Abscessed teeth are no joke. The infection can spread quickly, and since your mouth is in your head where your brain resides, you’re playing with fire if you let this one go.

People have died within days of neglecting an abscess. DO NOT procrastinate on this.

A dental abscess can be painful and dangerous, it develops when a pocket of infection forms either in the gums or at the base of a tooth. An abscess in a tooth can form because of the advanced tooth decay, failing root canal treatment or as a result of injury to the tooth.

A gum abscess can develop as a result of untreated periodontal disease. Occasionally even a piece of food that has lodged between the root of the tooth and gum may cause the infection.

Signs of an abscess are different and may include a bubble of pus that formed around the infected area. Sudden, intense pain in the area near the affected gum or tooth may also be a sign of an abscess. The pain might be bad and get worse when a person lies down on one side. Other signs of a dental abscess include gum bleeding, bad breath, swelling, and sensitivity to chewing or pressure on the tooth or gum.

Wisdom teeth became inflamed

Wisdom teeth are notoriously painful. They seem to come whenever they want, and when they do, they can easily cause pain. Pericoronitis is an infection that can occur when your wisdom teeth don’t come in properly. The risk of this spreading is too high to ignore this case.

If you get it, you’ll know because of your irritated gums in that area, as well as possible bad breath. You might aslo  feel pain and pressure in your wisdom teeth area. Give us a call as soon as possible.

How Often Should I See The Dentist?

Children, teens, and adults should all see the dentist for a regular checkup at least once every six months. Patients who are at a greater risk for oral cancer or gum disease may be required to see the dentist more than just twice a year. Your doctor will help determine how often you should visit the dentist for regular check-ups.

Do you have pediatrics?

yes

What is the most common dental emergency?

Tooth pain and abscesses are the most common dental emergencies – and almost always require the need for a root canal.

What is the most dangerous dental emergency?

There are many different dental emergencies that all require immediate attention, but infections causing abscesses need to be treated as soon as possible before it has a chance to spread.

What should you do if your molar breaks off at the gum line?

If one of your molars breaks off at – or beneath – the gum line, call us immediately. Otherwise, you risk infection, abscess, and even nerve damage.

How do I know if my infection is spreading?

An infection in your tooth can spread if left untreated. It can even make its way into your bloodstream and to your major organs becoming a medical emergency. Infection in the tooth can cause your neck, mouth, and jaw to painfully swell. This requires immediate attention. When it spreads further, you will develop symptoms such as headache, fever, dizziness, face swelling, dehydration, increased heart rate, rapid breathing, etc. If you experience any of these, seek emergency medical treatment right away.

Seeing Emergency Dentist No Insurance:

Unfortunately, the lack of dental insurance is still a number one reason for many to avoid regular visits to a dentist. We offer reasonable fees along with various payment options. If you do not have dental insurance and are experiencing a dental emergency in Toronto/Richmondhill, it is possible to get the dental treatment you need. Just give us a call.

Emergency Dental Care with Insurance:

NorthHill Dental accepts most dental insurances. In few cases of medical trauma medical insurance coverage may be utilized. It depends on the type of treatment you are receiving and the cause of the injury. If you have insurance, our treatment coordinators will work with you to help you better understand what is covered and what is your coinsurance.
